Environmentally conscious community development

I have recently thought that in my next career, I would like a different one than I currently have. I work in the technology field, and would rather work in some sort of environmental field. The thing that I think would interest me is doing planning and design for some sort of environmentally friendly homes and communities. Sort of taking the concept of eco homes to the next level, by providing an all encapsulated environmentally conscious experience. From the the design of the home, taking into consideration the climate, the geography, etc, all the way to the community level, ensuring that it's fairly sustainable, with as much of the consumable goods being grown and produced locally.
